Actually it was 4chan that had actual pictures and stories from doctors in China>5 weeks before anything hit the press. And detailed updates as to the ongoings in Wuhan long before it even scratched the surface of the US news cycle.

The Grey Lady is obsolete. The grey/“dark” web reigns.

The Chinese government hid the early news. Sadly the US government is behaving like the Chinese one. Who’s the real authoritarian now?

Riot police shot tear gas and pepper balls at students after classes closed at University of Dayton, Ohio due to coronavirus.

WHO officially declares COVID-19 a pandemic.

Only decisive thing Trump has done is stick his orange thumb up his orange ass.

In the Dayton source, I didn’t notice an explanation of why these morons were congregating so numerously and densely at a time like this.

A potent mixture of: canceling classes a few days early from virus scare, a few students got evicted from student housing earlier than expected angry at being homeless, international students unable to go home from travel restrictions everywhere, annual spring break celebration that gets rowdy enough for the police to come every few years.

Broken glass, destroyed cars, a few injuries, multiple arrests. This is Rust Belt America today, folks.

Sounds like many candidates for the Darwin Awards, also to admin.

Showing up at an ER only to be told not sick enough to get tested: $10,000
Political blowback: Priceless

Yeah, the copay was only $75 but eye popping sums should not be floating around in the first place on what is clearly value-free work. In the UK, they will tell you over the phone you won’t get tested for free.

The story is missing a couple of details.

At the point that she realized she may have covid19, did she isolate herself? Why would she go to the ER in person to get tested, exposing others to potential infection. instead of using the Internet/calling to make non-disruptive arrangements (the PPE at least the first time that was an unnecessary waste)? After she got home from the ER, did she isolate herself until learning the results of test?

This intense focus on testing and (belatedly) hand washing, compared to how to actually behave to try to slow the spread of covid19 if symptoms arise is fascinating. It is good that her results were negative, since it appears her behavior would likely have been spreading the virus for days beforehand if she had the disease.

Unfortunately, the U.S. does not seem to have much capacity to actually teach people what to do to slow a pandemic, particularly as the point where such knowledge would have been extremely valuable was two weeks ago. The other lack is how many Americans can easily take two weeks off if they have fever, headaches and tightness in their chest? Americans already know that answer, and it likely explains a lot of the panic. As well it should – in countries like France, Germany, or Italy, it is generally no problem for employees to not be worried about paying for medical services or sick leave. Though inconclusive, it does appear that the first German attempt at containment was adequate – and part of how easy that was to do involved having all employees in contact with a Chinese employee stay home for two weeks (longer if they developed symptoms during that time). A thoroughly normal process, except that by being under quarantine, the company can recover its costs from the government. No need to jerryrig anything in the face of a pandemic, just a straightforward and well established process. It is possible that Webasto’s HR department needed to do a bit more than customary in finding the forms first 🙂

“Showing up at an ER only to be told not sick enough to get tested: $10,000”

If you show up to the ER, you’re taking up limited emergency resources that other people need. Showing up to the ER because you have the sniffles, or are hung over, or any other non-emergency condition should come with a large enough penalty to keep you from wasting valuable emergency resources in the future. Make an appointment with your doctor. Use a walk-in clinic. Save the ER for *emergencies*. It’s right there in the name.

I intended coronavirus to kill off the Boomers as a going away present or should I say a ‘welcome mat’. My kingdom is ready for a new demographic. The Greatest generation is getting annoying sanctimonious even for Me!

Speaking as a Boomer, I agree that much of the rest of my cohort, wanting it all, deserves only hell. The Boomers are not the Greatest Generation, however. The Greatest are the parents of the boomers. Clearly, the Greatest deserve some blame for those miserable ’68ers.

No. The Greatest generation is already in my kingdom and they are driving me nuts. There’s only so much “Leave It To Beaver” I can take in my infinitely long Life. I want Boomers to be the latest demographic up in this place to add a little sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll.

Look, I get it. Many books have been written by Me. I’m just not the clearest writer.

Leave it to Beaver was more of an early Boomer show.

Generations overlap, bro.

Not to mention the miracle of reruns.

But how can the parents of the Boomers be the greatest , considering they begat the Boomers?

The “greatest” is just a woid.

Democrats at prayer, “O God, please! Make the corona virus become a pandemic with widespread panic, tanking the US economy and allowing us to pin it all on Trump before the election . . . O Please; O Please, O Please, . . . Amen!”

Your prayers will be taken into consideration. But no, I don’t automatically vote for Republicans. God does not choose sides in your petty squabbles. I would like a sacrifice of 100 cows at the start of spring though. Or else I might create a bovine flu, BOVID-20 anyone? Just kidding. I’m not that petty.

OT – Farm Fiasco by James Bovard (1989) was a good read back when $100B actually was real money (well, maybe I’m being nostalgic, and it wasn’t real money even then).

The mainstream media is exaggerating. The coronavirus is barely worse than the flu. Panicking will not help anyone.

Maybe.

We don’t have good estimates of death rates [yet?] on account in an age of material abundance there ain’t enough testing kits, at least in the world’s most advanced third world country, the US of A.

But we have other sources of information. Brazil has done a good job containing the disease, testing people and keep normal life going. Brazil’s president, President Captain Bolsonaro, has said the mainstream media is exaggerating. The worse is probably over. I have stopped washing my hands (except after using the bathroom).

The Brazilian real is at an all time low against the dollar. Brazil’s Bovespa index is down 27% (36% in USD terms) this year. Brazil’s first coronavirus case came from Italy’s Lombardy region which itself is completely shutdown. Even if the Brazil keeps a lid on the virus, it is being punished by the markets because of relative financial safety.

So far, COVID19 has a contagion factor of two; SARS was four; measles is 18. It has a cure rate of 99.7% for those under 50. It is a viral pneumonia being hyped as The Black Plague before the election.

Coronavirus is Biden’s [He puts the Dem in dementia] and my Chicom bosses interfering in the 2020 U.S. election.

Biden’s coronavirus plot to fix the elections in Northern Italy, destabilize the Iranian regime, and influence the US election isn’t a sign of dementia but a 5D chess grandmaster.

Sounds very good, and I had heard about the dastardly measles. Wish I were younger, though … . 🙂

You saw written on a white board in some mysterious doctors office didn’t you? Notice all the incorrect terminology and incorrect information (such as the reproduction number being called a contagion factor)… seems legit.

I bet you send your money to a soldier over seas selling his car on Craigslist via western union too. Gullible idiot…

A few years ago, I sent this nice Nigerian prince (I met online) my bank account numbers . . .

You so smart.

Maybe it’s much more dire and Trump is keeping it from us.

The truth is out there.

We all go die from climate change!

We all (150,000,000 since 2005) go die from guns!

We all go die from coronavirus!

You see a pattern here?

It’s like the boy who cried wolf.

What is the COVID19 reproduction number, Oh Omniscient One?

What is the cure rate among youths under 50 years old?

Problem is that info isn’t being communicated.

Ergo, it’s the end of the World.

“Panicking will not help anyone.”

Not at all true. Panicking will help media sources sell ad space. It will help the political markets sell their ideas. Let’s face it- a good, limited scope panic is very beneficial to certain markets.

I’m an atheist, but this epidemic *is* starting to feel like a punishment from God sometimes. Especially in the way it, in contrast to most other epidemics, seems to be disproportionately affecting rich countries (except for China and Iran). Perhaps third-world countries just aren’t testing and their cases will explode in a few weeks, or perhaps God is a socialist.

Sometimes I don’t believe in Myself, so does that make me an atheist? I brought pestilence (and a deeply under reported plague of locusts) to this world for one reason and one reason only. To punish Boomer arrogance. I can’t stand gloaters. Don’t you just want to wish them dead? I know I do.

Respond

God, a socialist? Don’t make us laugh. If He were, don’t you think socialism would have worked. At. Least. One. Damn. Time?!

Clearly God’s a Social Democrat. But not one of the commie ones.

I feel gentle wafts of dialectical materialism.
